Why You Should Be Recruiting Now
“Uncertain” is probably the best word to describe the current situation we’re in. Many healthcare practices have implemented hiring freezes and, worse yet, some practices have had to lay off providers. While we focus on fighting a pandemic, millions of Americans are putting off routine medical visits and elective procedures.
What we don’t know is WHEN we will get back to normal. What we do know is that we WILL get back to normal. And when that day arrives, demand for quality healthcare providers will be at an all-time high.
Government assistance programs have helped businesses keep their doors open, but the harsh reality is that many outstanding physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants have been laid off or furloughed. With this sudden influx of talented healthcare providers available in the job market, now is the perfect time for organizations to start thinking about recruiting.
Shortly before the pandemic, the Association of Staff Physician Recruiters (ASPR) conducted a survey which revealed the average physician search took 161 days to complete. That means that if you start recruitment efforts today (even during this chaotic time), a likely end date to your search for a new provider would be more than 5 months away, in mid-October. While the current situation has made some physicians available for employment sooner, it hasn’t shortened the timeline for credentialing, relocation, or other common factors impacting employee start dates. So practices needing providers for fall of 2020 or even early 2021 should begin their recruiting processes now. And practices looking to hire providers sooner have even more reason to begin their recruitment efforts immediately.
While the current state of affairs has left many industries in a state of confusion with hanging unknowns, healthcare will always be needed. If you’re a practice looking to take on more patients as we see the world return to normalcy, consider starting your recruitment efforts now. There are many talented providers in the market for a new opportunity and they won’t be available for long.
